Regional Office for Civil Rights Training:

What Parents and Educators Need to Know About Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act ponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, in collaboration with the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities

Participants will gain an understanding of the requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and recent amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Participants will review the history behind Section 504 and recent amendments to the ADA, learn the differences between an IEP and a 504 Plan, and discuss the impact that these laws have on the education of children with disabilities in public elementary and secondary schools.

OCECD Southern Office Update

The Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities Southern office has recently moved. The Southern office covers Adams, Brown, Clermont, Clinton, Fayette and Highland counties.

The Ohio Coalition is a statewide non-profit organization that offers free in-service training, information and technical assistance to families and professionals on advocacy and educational topics for children with disabilities from birth to 26 years old.

The Coalition provides training and support for Parent Mentors of Ohio. The Parent Mentors have knowledge about educational services and supports in their county and/or school districts. Parent Mentors in the Southern office’s area are:

Adams County: Carla Brown@ 937-386-1039 serves Adams County/Ohio Valley district;

Fayette County: Pam Thornburg@ 740-333-2400 ext. 2703 serves Miami Trace Local school district and Washington Court House City school district;

Highland County: Bonnie Hankey @ 937-393-1331 serves all Highland County school districts.
